Spending the last weeks in Denmark

Time flies and it's almost time to say goodbye to beautiful Denmark. That's why I really tried to enjoy the last weeks to the fullest.

Swimming in the sea

 Going out in Copenhagen

Bingo at Cheers

Trip to Skagen (the very top of Denmark where the two oceans collide)

Trip to Göteborg (Sweden)

Spending the evening in Tivoli

I really enjoyed going for a walk in the evenings and watching sunsets at the harbour.

At the graduation ceremony we got our transcript of records and were invited to dinner and a graduation party afterwards. That day was amazing!

Despite all that, it was also time to say goodbye to some of my new friends. It's sad but it's also good to know that I now have friends all over Europe.

Erasmus was definitely one of the best experiences of my life. I will miss everything and everyone. But now it's time to go home and I'm looking forward to that too. :-)

~ Don't be sad because it's over. Smile because it happened. ~

Up to the North

After a long period without travelling we thought it was time for sightseeing again.
That's why on Monday, the 27th of May we started our trip to the North. At first we took the plane to Stockholm, where we spent a wonderful and sunny day.

In the afternoon we took the ferry to Helsinki (because it had worked so well with Oslo). The ferry was amazing - inside it looked like a huge mall with shops, restaurants, bars and so on. We spent the evening exploring the ship and having some cocktails. Afterwards we had a nice time on deck watching the sunset.

The next morning the ferry arrived at Helsinki and we immediately started our sightseeing tour. To be honest, I wasn't expecting that much from Helsinki. But it really surprised me because it turned out to be a very impressive city: beautiful places mixed with perfect weather - AMAZING.

After we had seen the sunny side of Stockholm on Monday we got to know the rainy side on Wednesday. The rain was accompanied by some troubles with cash machines, opening hours, impolite people and weddings in ice bars. But we made the best of it.

~ Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain ~

I really enjoyed our trip. Travelling with the girls means always a lot of fun.

Spending the weekend in Austria

On the 8th of May I took the plane to Austria. I got the tickets as an Easter present from my parents - but the best thing was, that nobody except my parents knew that I would come.
My dad picked me up from the airport. When we stopped at our house it felt completely normal and as if nothing had changed.

What I liked best on that day were all the surprised and puzzled faces. The reactions were simply awesome: all of them were starring at me with their mouth wide open. ;-) It felt so good to see all of them again and to tell them about my experiences.

In the course of the days I spent at home I realised how much support and love I get from my family and friends.

I guess you really start to appreciate these things when you haven't seen them for a long time. <3

The Class

Last week we watched the movie "The Class" for Educational Studies. It is about a teacher (Mr. Marin) who tries to manage a quite difficult classroom at a school in Paris. The movie shows how difficult it can be to deal with pupils from different cultural backgrounds.

Esmeralda - Khoumba - Mr. Marin - Souleymane - Henriette

Esmeralda and Khoumba are very noticeable during the whole movie. They have a bad attitude towards their teacher and query everything he says. They have no respect and make it nearly impossible for Mr. Marin to conduct a lesson without being disturbed or to create an effective learning environment.

Obviously these two teenagers have a lot of things to deal with outside the school. Despite their bad behaviour Mr. Marin doesn't give up and always tries to remain sympathetic and professional. Although Khoumba shows no respect to her teacher Mr. Marin asks her about her problems. He wants to get to know his pupils in order to understand them better.

Esmeralda is a member of the student representation. While the teaching staff discusses about Souleymane who hurt Khoumba during the lesson she doesn't pay attention to this serious topic. The teaching staff tries to find a solution for Souleymane's case and after some time they decide to expell him. As a student representative it should be Esmeralda's job to defend her colleagues and to campaign for their interests but she just makes fun of the other teachers.

Surprisingly none of the teaching staff tries to stop her. In my opinion that's something you can observe during the whole movie: on the one hand the teachers are desperate because they can't get through to their students and on the other hand they are lacking fortitude in order to make sure "Who is the authority in the classroom?"

Mr. Marin for instance tries to teach in a loose way but I think this method is not really appropriate to the students' behaviour and attitudes. He just focuses on the "noticeable" students while other students don't participate at all. I think that's one of the reasons why Henriette who is one of the very quiet girls in class says that she learned nothing during the whole school year. It seems that the teacher has focused too much on the "troublemakers" and totally forgot the other students.

But at least Mr. Marin's teaching methods had a positive effect on some of the students. They had to write self-portraits in order to show who they really are and also to learn something about themselves.
I think it is always important as a teacher to know your students. Because then you can sort of understand why they show this special behaviour.

As busy as a bee :-)

Many people think that Erasmus students are only partying their whole semester abroad. But that's not true. Some of us are actually very busy with university stuff.

Besides writing term products, doing research projects with Malaysian and Danish students and spending time in the teaching experience class, I was collecting data for my bachelor thesis.

Since I want to write about the impacts of anxiety on learning and the forms of pre-/ intervention in Denmark, I had to do some interviews with my lecturers. The interviews itself were very revealing - I think Danish teachers regard teaching in general and the relation between teachers and their students in a completely different way. Thus, I'm convinced that we should have a look at Denmark!

Exploring Denmark

I've been to lots of beautiful places on our lovely island Zealand. I love travelling and exploring new places. That's why the last weekend was just awesome. Alexandra's grandparents came to visit her and they invited Theresa and me to join their trip. So we went to Møn's Klint. This place is just awesome with its huge chalkstone cliff and the turquoise sea.

We had lunch in Stege and went on to Faxe and Stevns Klint. We spent a nice time there.

Educational Studies

Observation in Svend Gønge Skole
(group: Theresa, Lisa, Alexandra)

On the 30th of April we went with our class to Lundby. We observed the school environment and the resources in Svend Gøng Skole. The task was to find out which teaching approaches can be applied in that school.

There are three different teaching approaches:

Executive Approach:
The executive approach is teacher-centered.The teacher explains everything and the students just listen. The main focus lays on knowledge.

In some classes it would have been possible to apply the executive approach. We couldn't really observe this method in a whole lesson, but in one class the introduction of the lesson was teacher-centered.

Facilitator Approach:
The facilitator approach is student-centered. The teacher focuses on the students needs and backgrounds and on the students as unique persons. The teacher facilitates environment for the children.
We couldn't really observe this kind of approach on the basis of the resources.

Liberationist approach:
The liberationist approach is student-centered and focused on knowledge and individual aims. The students should develop social skills to lead a civilized life. The aim is that the students become responsible and indepentent individuals of society.

On the basis of the observed classroom management we think that this approach is high frequently used in this school:

  • The students worked independently.
  • They could decide on their own whether they wantet to work in groups or alone/ inside or outside the classroom.
  • The children could choose between several worksheets according to their abilities.
  • There were some learning materials on the cupboards, which could be used in class.
  • Every class has its own rules for a good cooperation.

Further observations in the school:
  • computer corner outside the classroom
  • big library
  • big gym
  • assembly hall
  • green areas outside the school
  • group tables in some classes
  • kitchen unit and fridge in every classroom
  • smartboards in almost every classrooms
  • tables in front of the classrooms which could be used for independent learning
